The Invention of Tradition

Traditions are the means by which one generation communicates its values and purpose to the next. As such it plays a critical role in the evolution of culture within a society. Traditions become a important instrument of change, or a significant barrier. This book explores how traditions are at times a recent invention rather than an established ritual, and the implications for fire service culture are profound.
