EMA has announced a new pilot program to support communities’ recovery after wildland fires. FEMA will make Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) funding available for areas impacted by wildland fires following a Fire Management Assistance Grant (FMAG) declaration made between March 4, 2015, and September 30, 2015.
FEMA encourages the use of this pilot program to mitigate burn-impacted areas to reduce the increased risk of wildland fires, flooding or landslides.
Because state, territories and federally recognized tribal governments technically are the grantees in FMAG declarations, IAFC members are encouraged to contact their state, territorial or tribal emergency managers about this pilot program.

This program was created as part of the Fiscal Year 2015 Department of Homeland Security Appropriations Act (P.L. 114-4), due to direct advocacy by the IAFC. The FEMA Disaster Assistance Reform Act (H.R. 1471) would make this program permanent and is also supported by the IAFC.
