On the Cutting-Edge: Suicide Intervention and Prevention

In October, the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation held a summit, "Generating Strategies and Materials to Support Suicide Prevention and Intervention in the Fire Service," in Emmitsburg, Md.

During the summit, researchers provided background on what's known about depression and suicide in the fire service and its prevention/intervention and work began on developing a strategic plan to move the issue forward. NFFF released two suicide guides and solicited feedback from attendees on several applications, tools and resources that are poised to be deployed.

Todd LeDuc attended the summit on behalf of the SHS Section; if you want more information, contact Chief LeDuc by email. A white paper created in 2011 is available from the Life Safety Initiatives website (PDF).
