The IAFC's Volunteer & Combination Officers section has recently opened up the nomination process for several awards and scholarships. These opportunities are presented in conjunction with the 2024 "Symposium in the Sun" leadership conference, which will take place November 14-17th in Clearwater, FL, with the exception of the Training Officer award which is presented at Fire-Rescue International (FRI).
- Frank Byrne Memorial Scholarship
Named for a lifelong volunteer firefighter from Collingdale (PA) Fire Department #1, this scholarship provides 2 recipients with full SUN conference registration and a $1,500 stipend to help cover their travel and lodging expenses. Preference is given to first time Symposium in the Sun attendees.
- Chief Robert T. Bettenhausen Scholarship
This scholarship is named for one of VCOS's co-founders and the section's first secretary/treasurer, Chief Robert T. Bettenhausen (Tinley Park Fire Department). Recipients will have their SUN registration fees waived.
- Chief James P. Seavey, Sr. Scholarship
This scholarship seeks an individual that embodies the ideals of Chief James Perrin Seavey, Senior. Someone that has made it their goal to ensure the health and wellness of their sisters and brothers physically, mentally and spiritually. The winner will be given a complimentary conference registration and receive a $1,500 scholarship presented at the Symposium in the Sun conference.
