Training is the foundation of any fire department. It is what prepares firefighters to be ready to respond to fires and a vast array of other emergencies so they can effectively and safely protect their communities. It is critical that training programs meet the needs of the firefighters, department, and community. That is why the theme for Safety Stand Down 2024, taking place June 16-22, is “Fire Training: Back to Basics.” This theme emphasizes the importance of training by reinforcing proper strategies and tactics with a focus on the fundamentals.
All fire departments are encouraged to suspend non-emergency activities during the campaign week to focus on training and education related to this year’s theme. The week will be broken into five daily focus areas: building the foundation of a training program, assessing the needs of the community and department, safety during training, physical and behavioral health considerations, and the 12 Foundations of Fire Department Training.
To help departments participate, resources and planning tools are available on the Safety Stand Down website. This includes the 12 Foundations of Fire Department Training flyer and poster, activity ideas, motivational tools, and more. In addition, the Safety Stand Down Sweepstakes Quiz is now live – take the 10-question quiz by June 19 to test your knowledge of this year’s theme and enter to win one of 200 limited-edition challenge coins.
Safety Stand Down is a joint initiative of the International Association of Fire Chiefs Safety, Health and Survival Section, the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC), the National Fire Protection Association®, the Fire Department Safety Officers Association, and the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF). Held each year during the third week of June, the campaign works to reduce the number of preventable injuries and deaths in the fire and emergency services.
