Excellence in Fire and Life Safety Award

City of St. Paul, Minnesota’s Director of the Department of Safety and Inspections, Angie Wiese, was honored with the 2023 Excellence in Fire and Life Safety Award for her history of courage, determination, and dedication to fire and life safety.

The International Code Council and the Fire & Life Safety Section of the IAFC developed the award. It honors individuals who have dedicated themselves to saving lives and property through their work on building codes, fire-prevention practices, legislative efforts, and strong leadership.

In 2005, the City of Saint Paul hired Angie to be a fire protection engineer. Angie was promoted to Fire Safety Manager in 2016 and in 2022, was promoted to her current position as Department of Safety and Inspections Director. Under Wiese’s leadership, the City’s department received the Innovation Award from the Kennedy School for Fire Safety Inspection Program. Her commitment to health, safety, and housing stability for Saint Paul’s unsheltered residents resulted in the creation of the City’s Homeless Action Response Team, a model for other cities.

After her time on the FLSS board, Angie was elected to the Board of Directors for the International Code Council in 2022, and through her involvement and representing the Fire Safety industry on the ICC Board of Directors, she has brought a different perspective and has raised the bar for those in fire safety that will come after her on the ICC board. Angie is an example of a true fire service leader who values the FLSS mission and provides the support to get things done.
