2022 Excellence in Fire and Life Safety Award Presented to Jeff Shapiro

Jeffrey M. Shapiro, P.E., FSFPE has been named the recipient of the 2022 Excellence in Fire & Life Safety Award at the Fire-Rescue International conference in San Antonio, TX. The award, sponsored by the International Code Council (ICC) and the Fire & Life Safety Section (FLSS) of the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC), honors those who have dedicated themselves to saving lives and property through the development of codes and standards, supporting community risk reduction programs and fire-prevention practices, and demonstrating strong leadership techniques. Jeff graduated with a degree in fire protection engineering from the University of Maryland. He is a veteran of the fire service having served with career, combination, and volunteer fire departments during his career. He has also served as an adjunct faculty member at the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, MD. Jeff’s experience in fire prevention and life safety is extensive and diverse. This included serving as the Assistant Fire Marshal in the City of Fort Worth, TX Fire Department, as a Fire and Life Safety Program Manager for System Planning Corporation, as Fire Code Coordinator for the International Conference of Building Officials (ICBO) and the Western Fire Chiefs Association, as Chief Executive Officer of the International Fire Code Institute (IFCI), and as President of his own code consulting firm - International Code Consultants in Austin, TX. Jeff is a Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) Fellow and founding president of the Austin – San Antonio Chapter, past president of the North Texas Chapter of SFPE, a member of numerous National Fire Protection Association technical committees, as well as an honorary life member of the International Code Council. FLSS Chair Greg Rogers observed, “Jeff has been a long time participant in fire, building and residential code development. Over his long career he has championed new code requirements that address a number of key fire safety and enforcement concerns. Perhaps the highlight of his code development career was his leading a fire service coalition that got residential sprinklers adopted into the International Residential Code. Jeff is a true professional in all he does and is a good friend to many in the fire safety community.”
