Fairfax, Va. – The National Association of State EMS Officials (NASEMSO) recently announced a call for measures as part of the EMS Compass National Initiative, a national effort to provide tools to make it easier for agencies to measure performance by guiding them on what to measure and how to measure it.
The two-year initiative brings together 50 experts within the EMS and performance-management community, including Chief Bill Metcalf, 2013-14 IAFC president, who serves on the EMS Compass steering committee.
The EMS Compass National Initiative was launched earlier this year with funding provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration through a cooperative agreement with NASEMSO.
According to NASEMSO, the goal of EMS Compass is to create and evaluate performance measures and develop a system for designing measures that can live on well beyond the timeline of the current initiative. Measuring the quality of care in EMS has become critical not only for quality improvement efforts, but also because healthcare financing is changing rapidly.
EMS Compass is accepting EMS performance-measure suggestions from the public through May 31. This call for measures is your chance to submit potential measures to be considered by the EMS Compass initiative. Measures must be submitted online.

Additionally, a series of webinars will be offered on June 15 and 16 on the various performance-measure domains, such as patient and family engagement, patient safety, clinical process and effectiveness, efficient use of healthcare resources, workforce, fleet, data and finance, among others.
